Dear Members of the HWS Community,

It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of Michael D. Eames, an adjunct professor who taught pre-calculus and calculus at Hobart and William Smith since 2022.

During his time with us, Mike became a valued colleague and a devoted educator whose commitment to his students was unmistakable. Known for his approachability, patience and gift for storytelling, he created a classroom environment in which students felt both supported and inspired. His office hours were consistently filled, a testament to the trust and connection he fostered. As Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Erika L.C. King observed, “He was the most dedicated and invested adjunct professor we have ever had… Students felt comfortable asking him questions and loved his storytelling.”

Even as he faced serious illness, Mike’s dedication never wavered. Chair of Mathematics & Computer Science Joseph Rusinko says that Mike spoke often of the profound joy he found in teaching and went to extraordinary lengths to remain engaged with his students, scheduling cancer treatments around the academic calendar and returning to the classroom far sooner than expected. His commitment reflected not only his professionalism, but also the deep sense of purpose he brought to his work.

We mourn Mike’s passing and are grateful for the many ways he enriched our community. On behalf of Hobart and William Smith, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Sincerely,

Mark D. Gearan
President
