We believe playing the sport you love is a key aspect of a stellar education. The companies that hire our Athlete-Scholars cite their work ethic, time management and collaborative spirit — all attributes developed through teamwork and high-level competition.

Proud members of the Liberty League, our 31 varsity teams compete in the NCAA’s Division III — with the exception of Hobart lacrosse, which competes in Division I. Student-athletes enjoy playing for championship caliber teams without sacrificing academic pursuits.

The Statesmen and Herons have a legacy of success in the athletic arena that boasts 26 team national championships. Most recently, the Hobart Hockey team won its third-straight national championship, winning the title in 2023, 2024 and 2025. HWS has more than 747 All-Americans in its rich history, listing its student-athletes among the top competitors in the nation.

During the 2025-26 academic year, the Herons and Statesmen won six conference championships. In the fall, the Hobart soccer team went undefeated in the regular season for the first time since 2008, clinching its fifth Liberty League championship and 10th NCAA tournament appearance. The William Smith cross country team captured its fourth-straight Cross Country Only Conference Championship. In the winter, Hobart Hockey won its fourth-straight league title, winning the State University of New York Athletic Conference title for the first time in program history. In addition, the men’s alpine skiing team won the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association Mideast title. In the spring, the William Smith lacrosse team and William Smith rowing teams each won their 10th Liberty League titles.

At Hobart and William Smith, we know what it’s like to go up against giants. And win. We’ve taken on some of the biggest names in academia and sports and come out on top.

Our Debate team is a perfect example. At the 2024 World University Debate Championship in Vietnam, HWS defeated every U.S. liberal arts college and bested teams from Princeton, Cornell and Harvard. HWS is now ranked #17 in the world.

And our Hobart and William Smith Sailing team? They’ve beaten teams from Brown, Cornell and UPenn. With skill, teamwork and determination, they’ve proven that no matter how big the competition, our students bring their A game.

The Statesmen and Herons had their share of postseason success in 2025-26. Hobart hockey made it to its fourth-straight national title game. William Smith rowing finished third at the national championships, matching the program’s best-ever finish on the national stage (2002). William Smith volleyball made a second straight appearance in the national tournament and Hobart baseball returned to the big dance for the first time since 1992. Both teams won their first NCAA tournament games this season. Hobart soccer and Hobart swimming also made NCAA tournament appearances.

Individually, Aspen McAuley ’29 and Will Patton ’28 won national titles for the HWS Alpine Ski Team. McAuley won the slalom national championship and was crowned the top women’s alpine ski racer at the national championships. Patton also won the slalom on the men’s side. In the pool, Daniel Barrientos ’26 placed seventh on the 3-meter diving board and 20th on the 1-meter board at nationals.

We also have robust club and intramural offerings. We’re good at helping students maintain balance.

Come do what you love. Get a great education. Here, you can have both.
