Hobart and William Smith Colleges

Binjo Emmanuel '20 anchored Hobart’s defense to a 1-0 victory over then No. 5 Messiah to open the season. The Statesmen went on to win the Liberty League Championship and Emmanuel was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region first team.

Mackenzie Wodka '23 scored twice during William Smith’s 3-2 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence, including the game winner in overtime. She finished the year with a team best 14 points on five goals and four assists.

This Week in Photos recognizes our student-athletes who recently learned they won’t be able to compete against other teams this fall, although they will be able to practice. Here we highlight an athlete from each team who nailed a key play last season. Above, Rayshawn Boswell '23 sealed Hobart’s New York State Bowl victory over Cortland with a 95-yard kickoff return. He led the nation with a Hobart season record 36.9-yard kick return average.

Maialen Martinez '21 scored the game-winning goal 1:47 into the second overtime to lift William Smith past No. 10 Hardin-Simmons 1-0. The Herons advanced to the national championship game and finished the year second in the nation. Martinez was named the D3soccer.com Defender of the Year and was the United Soccer Coaches Scholar Player of the Year.

Hobart rallied from a 13-point deficit to defeat No. 17 Springfield 62-61 and advance to the third round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship for the first time in program history. Dan Masino ’21 hit a layup with two seconds remaining to give the Statesmen the lead and Tucker Lescoe ‘20 stole the Pride's inbounds pass to seal the victory.

The HWS sailing team opened the spring season winning the George Washington Team Race. Hector Guzman '20 and Maya Weber '20 led the Colleges to a 14-1 record on the weekend, crossing the line 1-2 in nine of their first 10 races. The duo became the first HWS sailors to earn All-America honors in each of their four seasons.

Forward Lauren Devaney '23 was named the Liberty League’s Rookie of the Week five times last season. The Geneva, N.Y., native scored 16 points in her collegiate debut, the most points by a Heron in her first game since 1993.

The Old Brick Plant, Watercolor, by Arthur Dove in 1937, Gift of Richard A. Scudamore ’55. Dove was a member of the Hobart class of 1903 before receiving his undergraduate degree from Cornell University. Originally from Geneva where his father owned a brick plant, he painted many of his most influential works while living on Exchange Street.

Quinn Udy '21 posted a 2-0 weekend to open the season. He logged wins in the No. 2 spot against Chatham and Denison. Udy finished the year with a 12-10 overall record, including a 11-8 mark in the No. 1 spot.

Josh Wasserman ’20 won the Alfred Invitational by five seconds over teammate Jacob Appleton ’23 as the Statesmen won the team title by 21 points over the runner-up.
