The traditional Hobart Matriculation began when Hobart was founded in 1822 and has remained a way to honor the shared commitment to each other that resonates between the students, the College, and the more than 13,000 Hobart College alumni.

Opening the Convocation ceremony, students carry more than 100 flags across Stern Lawn to represent the nations of origin of current students, staff or faculty members, or where students and faculty are studying abroad. ​
