31 January 2020 Apply Now: Technos Program in Tokyo

The Center for Global Education is accepting applications from Hobart and William Smith students to attend an intensive language and cultural exchange program at Technos International College in Tokyo from June 14 to June 27. During the all-expenses-paid program at Technos International Week, sponsored by the Tanaka Ikueikai Educational Trust, HWS participants visit classes at the college, interact with its students and faculty and enjoy access to numerous other academic, cultural and social activities.

Hosts will provide in-country travel for two students and an accompanying HWS faculty member, as well as all accommodations in Tokyo and elsewhere, and many meals during the two-week stay. HWS will cover international airfare, a spending allowance for remaining meals and a small stipend for personal expenses.

Student participants will be selected based on specific criteria, including academic performance; demonstrated interest in Japan and its people, culture and history; no previous travel experience in Japan; no fluency nor functional literacy in Japanese language; and possession of or eligibility for a passport from the United States, any EU country, Singapore, Chile, or any nation whose citizens do not need a visa to enter Japan.

Selected students must also contribute to a follow-up activity on the HWS campus to share Technos experience and to help welcome Japanese students to the Colleges; therefore, to be eligible, applicants must plan to be on campus for the fall 2020 semester.

Applications are due Thursday, February 13, along with an essay and formal letter of recommendation from an HWS faculty member. Interested students can find applications and more information at the Office of Global Education on the third floor of Trinity Hall. The Technos International Week blog features the experiences of previous recipients.

For more than 25 years, Technos International Week has been a core component of global education at HWS. Technos International Week began in 1992, thanks to the generosity of the Tanaka family and the Tanaka Memorial Foundation, whose gifts established the Tanaka Asian Studies Endowment and annually support the Asian Studies Program, the Tanaka Lectureship in Japanese, and other programming at HWS. Additionally, 1992 marked the beginning of two initiatives with Technos International College (sponsored by the Tanaka Ikueikai Educational Trust), the International Prizes for Academic Excellence and International Understanding, and the Technos International Week.
