18 November 2025 • Service From Tutor Corps to Civic Leaders

Through their work with the HWS Tutor Corps, Jade Miranda ’28 and Ydenruby Facio ’28 have demonstrated a deep commitment to Geneva youth — now strengthened through PCCE’s signature leadership and service-learning program.

Posse Scholars Jade Miranda ’28 and Ydenruby Facio ’28 have been selected as Leadership Engagement Action Fellows (LEAF) by Partners for Campus Community Engagement, building on their dedication to serving Geneva’s youth.

The LEAF program empowers participants to become civically engaged leaders through mentorship, professional development and guided service learning. Fellows participate in a yearlong series of workshops and service planning activities, culminating in the creation of a community engagement project aligned with their personal and academic goals.

“My goal coming into my second year of college was to further engage with the Geneva community and, so far, it has opened me academically and personally to new passions and fruitful connections,” says Miranda, a double major in media and society and politics. “This is an amazing opportunity to deepen my understanding of community engagement — both as a career path and as a way to connect more deeply with the place I now call home.”

“As a LEAF scholar, I am most excited about learning from mentors and engaging in service learning,” says Facio, an architectural studies major. “Through this program, I hope to grow personally and professionally through LEAF’s leadership and career development opportunities.”

Demonstrating a strong commitment to service through their work with the HWS Tutor Corps, Miranda and Facio provide academic support to local youth.

“We’re incredibly proud of Jade and Ydenruby for earning this opportunity,” says Peter Budmen ’15, MAT ’16, the associate director of the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. “Their leadership in the Tutor Corps and beyond reflects the best of what HWS students bring to campus and the broader community. I look forward to seeing how they apply what they learn through LEAF to inspire their peers and strengthen our partnerships across Geneva.”

Miranda’s campus involvement includes the HWS Photography Club, Students for Humanitarian Justice, Debate Team and the Skate Club. Facio serves as the social media coordinator for the Latin American Student Organization, a member of the Kinetic Dance Collective and earned a Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish.

HWS has been longstanding members of Partners for Campus-Community Engagement and have benefited from the organization’s support through AmeriCorps grants, professional development opportunities, and through collaboration as co-host of the 2025 Community Development Society Annual Conference

Posse was established at HWS in 2000. One of the nation’s most prestigious and successful college access programs, the Posse Foundation has grown from the idea that sending a group — or “posse” — of 10 students to college together to act as a support system for one another could bolster collegiate success and graduation rates. HWS has two Posse partnerships: Los Angeles and Chicago.
