Happy Gilmore 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 1996 film Happy Gilmore, will be released Friday, July 25th on Netflix. Christopher McDonald '77, L.H.D.’13 returns to his iconic role as Shooter McGavin, the quick-witted and highly competitive pro-golfer that has been a fan-favorite antagonist for nearly 30 years.

In the sequel, Adam Sandler returns as Happy Gilmore, now a retired golfer who makes a final return to golfing after facing financial challenges. As in the original film, Happy Gilmore 2 will also explore the continued rivalry between Happy Gilmore and Shooter McGavin.

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, McDonald shares his hopes for the film, saying he expects viewers to take away “a lot of laughs, and a lot of heart.”

Beyond his memorable role as Shooter McGavin, McDonald has built a notable career in Hollywood, performing in nearly 100 films and countless television and theatre productions. Most recently, he earned an Emmy nomination for his role as Marty Ghilain in the HBO Max television series Hacks.

At HWS, McDonald earned his degree in English, cum laude. He was a member of the Hobart football and soccer teams, and a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He has returned to campus numerous times to present lectures, network with students and participate in Reunion. A staunch supporter of HWS and the arts, the black box theatre in the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts is named the McDonald Theatre in his honor.
