The Deborah Tall scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate refined writing skills based on 10-15 pages of original creative writing in any combination of fiction, poetry or creative non-fiction (this can be multiple pieces of writing). Each applicant will also need to submit a personal statement between 200-500 words that talk about the applicant as a writer. The HWS writing and rhetoric faculty will evaluate each written portfolio and writing scholarships will be awarded based on their recommendations.

  • Early Decision I/Early Action candidates must submit SlideRoom application with portfolio items by November 15th.
  • If you are an Early Decision 2 candidate, your portfolio needs to be submitted by January 15th.
  • If you are a regular decision candidate, your portfolio will be due by February 1st.

MATERIALS

Personal Statement
Please include 200-500 words that talk about you as a writer. This can include but is not limited to; books you enjoy reading, writing or author inspiration, or the type of writing you enjoy.

Recommendation
Please submit a Letter of Recommendation from a private instructor or teacher in the specific art form you are applying for that can speak to your abilities. If you used a recommendation from a private instructor or teacher on your common app, you may also use it here.

Media
