Hobart and William Smith Colleges

In this special edition of This Week in Photos, all taken by Chief Photographer Kevin Colton, we applaud Hobart Hockey, ranked the Number 1 team in the nation. Here, the team gathers to celebrate Shane Shell’s ’25 overtime game-winner against Salve Regina. The win improved Hobart to 13-0-0 on the season.

Matthew Iasenza ’25 skates past a Colby defender. Iasenza had a goal and an assist in Hobart’s 2-1 victory over Colby.

Matthieu Wuth ’24 attempts to slip a backhand past the Colby goalie. Wuth and the Hobart defense rank first in the nation in scoring defense, allowing a goal per game.

In 1958, two William Smith tennis players shake hands on the newly constructed tennis courts. In 2017, the HWS Tennis Center was named the Morrow Championship Court, the Melly Court and the Hebard Court.

Built in 1890 and originally used as the Sigma Phi house, 601 South Main St. was renovated into the Finger Lakes Institute in 2004.

Students study and browse the stacks of the Colleges’ library located in Demarest Hall in 1950. The Blackwell Room remains a popular place to read and study.

In 1954, biology students conduct research in Odell’s Pond. Today, students conduct research in local creeks under the direction of Director of Introductory Biology Laboratories Susan Flanders Cushman ’98.

In This Week in Photos, we look at the HWS campus of today and yesterday. Whether the 1960s or the 2020s, the Quad is always a popular place to relax on a sunny day.

The original Hobart boathouse has since been replaced by the Bozzuto Boathouse constructed in 2003. The railroad line remains in use.

Hobart students in 1874 clean the South Campus. During a 2022 Day of Service, students work on the trails in Coopers’ Woods.

The Brackett Clark Reading Room in the Warren Hunting Smith Library was a popular place to study in 1976 and remains so in 2018.
