6 April 2012 NBCs Guthrie: Commencement Speaker

The co-host and chief legal analyst of NBCs TODAY show, Savannah Guthrie will join the Colleges as this years Commencement speaker. Fresh off her second time hosting NBCs Meet the Press, during which she interviewed GOP presidential hopeful and former Senator Rick Santorum, Guthrie will address the campus community during the 2012 Commencement ceremony held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 13.

We are truly fortunate to have one of our nations most astute legal and political correspondents join our community during an election year and at a time when the justice system is at the forefront of the nations conscious, says President Mark D. Gearan. As one of journalisms rising young voices, Ms. Guthrie will be able to provide informed perspective to our graduates as she shares the story of her own journey within the context of the important issues facing the country and our courts.

Prior to joining TODAY two years ago, Guthrie served as NBC News White House Correspondent for three years, offering candid commentary for NBC on Meet the Press, the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, and MSNBCs The Daily Rundown, where she also served as cohost. As part of the team that covered Sarah Palins campaign during the 2008 presidential election, she received an Emmy for her election night coverage.

Guthrie holds a bachelors in journalism from the University of Arizona, and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, where she graduated magna cum laude. After working as a journalist in Arizona and Missouri, Guthrie became the national trial and legal correspondent for Court TV. At Court TV, Guthrie cast a critical eye on many of the nations most important court hearings, providing the country with a comprehensive and critical analysis of major rulings and cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and Congress. Among the many high-profile cases Guthrie reported on were the Zacarias Moussaoui trial, the Lewis Scooter Libby case and the Samuel Alito confirmation hearings.

Commencement 2012 marks the 187thgraduation for Hobart and the 101stfor William Smith. This years ceremony will see about 225 Hobart and 245 William Smith students walk across the steps of Coxe Hall to receive their diplomas alongside eight MAT students.
