8 April 2019 South Korea for Padnos Scholar
Christopher Bell '19 has been chosen as the recipient of the Padnos Family Endowed Internship and Travel Award. Funded by gifts from Jeffrey S. and Margaret M. Padnos P'11, the annual award supports HWS students who are interested in an internship or research experience abroad. The $5,000 award covers lodging, airfare to a destination of the students choice and a stipend.
Bell spent his winter break in Seoul, South Korea working with ACOPIA (Asia Hope Camp), an organization which promotes cross-cultural immersion and improved Korean-Japanese communication.
An Asian Studies and Media & Society dual major, Bell was stationed in Yeonnam-Dong. "I was assisting ACOPIA in its mission to promote peace and cross-cultural leadership through multimedia marketing and translating," Bells says. "My job included creating original promotion strategies, managing company social media accounts, directing and editing videos for our online content sector and translating social media posts in Japanese and English."
Bell also hosted an English conversation table at the ACOPIA Cafe where locals practice their English in a casual setting, which he said was much like the Hobart and William Smith Conversation Tables hosted on campus by the language departments.
On campus, Bell is a member of Sigma Chi, served as president of English Country Dancing Club and participated in Anime United, Campus Activities Board, Christian Fellowship and the Asian Student Union.
At HWS, global experiences are a point of distinction. As part of Princeton Review's 2018 edition of The Best 382 Colleges, Hobart and William Smith were ranked first in the nation for study abroad opportunities and global programming. The Colleges were named as a top-producing Fulbright institution by the U.S. Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
