3 April 2026 • Alums Ruth’s Solo Exhibition “Here and There” Opens in Chelsea
Show at Planthouse Gallery features prints, drawings and paintings; opening reception April 23.
Professor of Art and Architecture Nicholas Ruth will present a solo exhibition, “Here and There,” at Planthouse Gallery in New York City’s Chelsea arts district. The exhibition opens on Thursday, April 23 with a public reception from 6–8 p.m. Members of the Hobart and William Smith community are invited to attend.

In a preview for the exhibition, Planthouse describes the exhibition and Ruth’s artwork as “images that exist across temporal registers, here and there, now and then, suggesting how all instances of the present are informed by our pasts and relate to futures we imagine and hope for.”

Melanie Sage ’95, P’25, P’27, executive director of alumni and alumnae relations, encourages alumni and members of the community in the New York City area to attend the opening reception and honor Ruth’s work.
“This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Professor Ruth’s remarkable artistic achievements and to connect with the vibrant Hobart and William Smith community in New York City,” Sage says.

Since joining HWS in 1994, Ruth has taught a variety of classes including painting and drawing. A multidisciplinary artist, his work spans prints, drawings and paintings, often exploring the interplay between structure, mark-making and visual perception. His teaching emphasizes both technical rigor and conceptual development, encouraging students to explore diverse approaches to art-making.
Ruth has exhibited widely in galleries and institutions across the United States and internationally. His work reflects a deep engagement with both traditional and experimental printmaking techniques, frequently pushing the boundaries of the medium while maintaining a strong foundation in observational practice.
