1 October 2026 • Athletics • Research HWS Day of Donors: Meet Isabella Miller ’28

HWS Day of Donors, a 24-hour giving challenge, kicks off Oct. 6. In this series of stories, meet six students whose pivotal HWS experiences were made possible through support from the Annual Fund. Here, Isabella Miller ’28 reflects on summer research.

For Isabella Miller ’28, a fully-funded summer research opportunity at HWS offered something that can be difficult to gain as an undergraduate: the chance to step beyond the classroom and experience scientific research firsthand.

HWS Day of Donors is Oct. 6-7. Make your gift here.

A biology and public health double major, Miller has always been interested in healthcare and is considering applying to medical school. Her summer research experience has also opened doors to possible opportunities in research and discovery.

“It gave me valuable hands-on research experience and strengthened my interest in scientific research before trying to decide if I want to go the med school route,” Miller says.

This summer, Miller worked alongside Professor of Biology Kristy Kenyon conducting research on gene interactions using fruit flies. With her research experience fully funded, she was able to spend the summer focused on scientific discovery, gaining experience and learning what it means to conduct research side-by-side with a faculty mentor.

“The faculty and staff in both the Biology and Public Health Departments have been incredibly supportive throughout my time at HWS,” Miller says. “They care deeply about their students and are always willing to help us pursue what we’re interested in.”

Miller has also had the opportunity to shadow a cardiologist at Finger Lakes Health. Additionally, she completed a J-term study abroad program in the Mediterranean Basin, where she says her coursework gave her a perspective on topics in global health.

On campus, Miller is a member of the William Smith cross country team.

Gifts to the Annual Fund, and specifically research opportunities, give students practical experience and open doors to new discoveries. Every year, more than 600 students are able to participate in internships and research, preparing them for the future. Make your gift to HWS Day of Donors.
