The Environmental Microplastic REU application is available through the NSF Education & Training Application (ETAP) portal.
Deadline
Completed applications, including transcripts and two (2) letters of recommendation must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on Monday, January 26, 2026. Applicants will be notified of decisions by February 17, 2026.
Application Procedure
Apply for this opportunity through the National Science Foundation application portal. This online application asks students to provide:
- Contact information,
- Academic information (with upload of an unofficial college/university transcript(s)),
- Short responses to the following questions:
- What is your goal for the research experience?
- What are your educational and career goals?
- Do you enjoy being part of a team? Why or why not?

- Names and contact information for two faculty or academic mentors who will be contacted for a letter of recommendation. Please make sure to seek permission from your recommenders before submitting their names.
Eligibility
Undergraduate students (first-year or sophomore) working toward a degree in STEM with an interest in environmental science are encouraged to apply. Prior research experience is not required. Participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
