Students are strongly encouraged to further explore the culture, history, art, language and people of a particular nation by participating in a semester abroad. There are a vast number of off-campus opportunities, including England, Italy, Denmark and the Czech Republic.

Recommended Programs

Bath, England

Hobart and William Smith maintain an affiliation with Advanced Studies in England (ASE). ASE, in association with University College, Oxford, provides opportunities for students to participate in a semester-length program in England. This program is based in the beautiful 18th century city of Bath, where students are integrated into British culture through living in the city, having membership in the University of Bath Student Union, and through volunteer and internship opportunities. This program incorporates a week-long residency at University College, Oxford University, and an extended excursion to Stratford-upon-Avon.

Rome, Italy

The interdisciplinary Rome program utilizes the entire city as a classroom or studio. While the program is designed to immerse students fully in the experience of being in Rome, excursions provide students a wider perspective on the history, culture and daily life of Italy as a whole. Students will in furnished flats to provide an opportunity to practice Italian language skills and experience Roman daily life. Students are affiliated with the Scuola Leonardo da Vinci (SLdV), one of the leading language and culture schools in Italy.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Hobart and William Smith have affiliated with the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) to offer an off-campus program in Copenhagen, capital of the oldest kingdom in the world and one of the most socially progressive countries in Europe. At DIS students can take classes taught in English and can participate in study tours to other European countries. Students in the program may choose to live either with a Danish host family, in an international student residence or in a flat with a Danish roommate, each offering a different cultural immersion experience. A challenging academic environment, coupled with Copenhagen's cosmopolitan appeal, creates an opportunity for a unique off-campus experience.

Prague, Czech Republic

This program is based at Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe, founded in 1348. The program through HWS is delivered by the "Undergraduate Program in Central European Studies" (UPCES), which is affiliated with Charles University's Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education. Each study abroad student is assigned to a Czech 'student buddy' upon arrival to help with social and cultural integration. UPCES encourages its students to spend the semester in Prague really immersing themselves in Czech life and culture.
