The William Smith College rowing teams varsity eight was named the Liberty League Boat of the Week by the conference office Monday, April 27th. On Friday, the Herons captured their fifth consecutive Liberty League Championship.
No. 11 William Smiths varsity eight powered by Susan Tuvell, Anola Stage, Caroline DeWeirdt, Emily Andersen, Emma Dow, Karoline Loretan, Laurie VanBenschoten, Alex Belden, and Morgan Burgess crossed the line first to collected gold medals for the Herons. William Smith opened up a six-seat lead on No. 13 RIT in the first half of the championship final and held off the Tigers second half charge to win in 7:26.2, 1.2 seconds ahead of second place RIT.
This is the fourth boat of the week award for the Herons this season. The varsity eight earned the award after the William Smith Challenge in the fall and after beating conference rivals Rochester and St. Lawrence at the end of March. The novice eight was honored after the Head of the Fish in October.
The Herons will be back in action on May 2-3 when they compete in the New York State Rowing Championships in Whitney Point, New York.
