On Wednesday, April 29, the HWS German Area Studies Program will screen acclaimed director Werner Herzogs Cave of Forgotten Dreams at the Smith Opera House at 7:30 p.m.
In a nutshell, the film is a documentary of a cave in Southern France containing some of the oldest human-painted imagery, says Ashwin Manthripragada, visiting assistant professor of German Area Studies. The film explores themes related to European Studies, Art and Art History, Archaeology, Architecture, History, Philosophy, Film and Media Studies, Cultural Studies, even Political Science and in a playfully bizarre Herzogian way, Science Fiction.
The screening is connected in part with Manthripragadas course, Exploring the Cave of Western Thought, an intersection between literature and philosophy starting with Plato and moving through various genres that deal explicitly or metaphorically with the image and implications of the cave.
The screening will be followedby an interdisciplinary discussion of the film and its various subject matter, led by HWS faculty Eric Klaus, associate professor of German Area Studies and associate dean of First Year Seminars; Courtney Wells, assistant professor of French and Francophone Studies; and Lisa Yoshikawa, assistant professor of History.
