The William Smith College field hockey team was recently named a 2014 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Academic Team Award recipient. Additionally, nine Herons were recognized for their excellence in the classroom with a spot on the 2014 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA National Academic Squad.
The National Academic Team Award recognizes institutions that had a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the 2014 fall semester.
The National Academic Squad celebrates student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year. The following William Smith student-athletes earned the honor this year:
First-year midfielder, Leigh Blackiston, undeclared
Sophomore forward, Biz Chirco, political science and public policy major
Sophomore goalie, Amy Feda, biology major
Sophomore midfielder, Austen Gillen-Keeney, architectural studies major
First-year goalie, Emily King, undeclared
Sophomore midfield/forward, Katie Meyer, undeclared
Junior midfield/forward, Erin Miller, chemistry major
Senior midfielder, Caitlin Moran, public policy major
First-year forward, Hannah Wood, undeclared
Chirco, Feda, Gillen-Keeney, Meyer, Miller and Moran also earned a spot on the 2014 Liberty League All-Academic Team. Miller is making her third straight appearance on the NFHCA National Academic squad while Chirco, Feda, and Gillen-Keeney made the team for the second straight season.
William Smith went 11-8 this season, beating top-seeded Rochester in the Liberty League semifinals before falling to nationally-ranked Skidmore in the finals. The Herons have posted 29 consecutive winning seasons.
