Cummings' sonnet to be published
18 November 2005 Cummings sonnet to be published
Peter Cummings, HWS professor of English and comparative literature, has had a sonnet, Shakespeare and Italy, accepted for publication in The Shakespeare Newsletter, now a quarterly journal.
The sonnet is the first of 10 in a set called, Shakespeare and Italy: Sonnets on the Travel Problem.
The journal's editors are limited in space for poetry, and have offered to include the following note: This poem is the title sonnet in a set of 10 addressing the still-vexed question of Shakespeare's travel to Italy before he began his 20-year career of writing for the theatre in London.
The set asserts that he did know Northern Italy firsthand at least for a short period of time.
The newsletter is published quarterly by the English Department at Iona College in New Rochelle.
