2 March 2015 Community Read Events Kick off

Were hoping to have more people than ever attend this years Community Read events, because were working with so many new community partners, said Executive Director Anne Schuhle. Our Family Reading Kits are available to borrow from the Geneva Neighborhood Resource Center. And we have events planned involving Stomping Grounds, Finger Lakes Gifts & Lounge, Geneva General Hospital Day Care, Child and Family Resource Center, The Geneva Historical Society, Quilty Pleasures and The College Store.

Other sponsors who are making the Community Read possible are: the Wyckoff Family Foundation, Geneva Public Library, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva 20/20, Finger Lakes Community College and Lyons National Bank.

Geneva Reads ultimate goal is to provide books and programming that help everyone realize the importance of literacy and that its never too soon to begin reading to children.

Community Read 2015

• March 6 Community Read Kick Off at Stomping Grounds, 22 Castle St., as part of the Geneva Night Out. Dont miss this event featuring book-themed refreshments, a photography contest, storybook reading and a chance to see the Geneva Reads video created by William Smith student Erin Moore. (5-8 p.m.)
• March 9 Quilting for Kids. Second-graders in RJ Jareckes art classes at West Street School will be introduced to quilting by the owners of Quilty Pleasures at 492 Exchange St. Their quilted wall hangings will be displayed at the quilt shop during Geneva Night Out May 1. Plan to stop by and see them.
• March 12 Three Elizabeths and a Rhoda, a night of local womens history fun, trivia and prizes, hosted by the Geneva Historical Society at the Geneva Public Library. (6:30 p.m.)
• March 13 Books n Brunch at The College Store, featuring a: complimentary brunch; 25 percent discount on The Invention of Wings; and 20 percent discount storewide (electronics, textbooks and special orders excluded). (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
• March 19 Pre-school-focused Family Literacy Night, featuring author Deborah Hopkinson of Oregon. The event, in the Pat Collins Black Box Theater at the Geneva Community Center on Carter Road, will be hosted by the Geneva General Day Care Center and Child and Family Resources Inc. (6:30 p.m.)
• March 19 and 20 Deborah Hopkinson, author of Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt and Under the Quilt of Night, will speak at local elementary schools.
• March 25 The Invention of Wings book discussion, facilitated by Jennifer Morris at Finger Lakes Gifts & Lounge at 60 Seneca St. (7 p.m.)
• March 27 Mapping Charleston: Geneva 20/20 will treat ninth-grade visitors to Hobart and William Smith Colleges to a talk by IT guru Rob Beutner, who has created an interactive map highlighting key sites in The Invention of Wings.
• March 30 Biographer Louise W. Knight will speak about the Grimke sisters in the Geneva High School auditorium. A complimentary reception, hosted by Finger Lakes Public Radio, WEOS, follows.
