10 February 2015 Leadership Discovery Offerings

This semester the Centennial Center for Leadership is looking for students to participate in The Leadership Discovery series. The Discovery series includes three programs: Foundations, Explorations, and the Leadership Lab. Each program will focus on examining leadership through the exploration and practice of related skills, tools, competencies, and strategies. Programs within the Discovery Series are open to all HWS students.

Leadership Lab The Lab is a six-week experiential program focused on effecting and managing change. Designed for leaders engaged in significant work, the Lab will delve into compelling discussions in order to further collective understanding of leadership in a broader context. Applications due to the CCL by Monday, Feb. 16.

Explorations Explorations is a six-week interactive workshop series crafted around the theme of Leading Others. Participants will have the opportunity to build upon the skills and competencies necessary for effective leadership. Applications due to the CCL by Monday, Feb. 16.

Foundations Monthly student facilitated sessions centered on fundamental leadership topics. The Foundations program is ideal for students looking to gain initial exposure to the realm of leadership. Registration based, email leadership@hws.edu for more info.

All programs within the Discovery Series are interactive and discussion based. In particular, the Explorations program works to assist students who are looking to take on more leadership responsibilities in the future. Explorations works with students to act as a springboard into more significant engagement in leadership and leaves students feeling prepared to take on more leadership roles.

Niame Traore 18, who completed the Explorations program, says The Explorations program provided me with a perfect foundation to work on my leadership skills and it has also inspired me take initiative in other aspects of my college experience.

The Leadership Lab is ideal for students who are currently serving in a leadership role either on campus or in the Geneva community, or even for students who are engaged in internship work. The Leadership Lab provides students with an opportunity to workshop challenges theyre facing in their current work.

Sarah Honan 17 completed the Leadership Lab program last semester. My favorite aspect of the Lab was being able to hear people share their experiences and thoughts on certain leadership topics, stated Honan. The Lab also showed me new ways to look at leadership and ways to continue to develop my personal leadership style.

Clayton Lyons 17 also participated in the Leadership Lab last semester. It definitely taught me the importance of viewing things from a variety of perspectives in order to best accomplish a task or overcome a challenge, states Lyons. For example, one of the words that we kept returning to was empathy. Never before did I think of empathy as being a crucial buzz-word in a leadership series but thats certainly something I gained from the program.
