An article by Catherine Gallout, chair of the HWS Department of French and Francophone Studies, Sade, noir et blanc: Afrique et Africains dans Aline et Valcour appeared in the last issue of the Canadian journal Lumens, devoted to the discourse on the Other in the 18th century. The article analyses a crucial moment in the representation of the African in fiction of that century.
Gallouet was also invited to talk at several international conferences. In October, she read the paper Marivaux, Don Quichotte, traducteurs du roman, at the meeting of the Canadian Society for Eighteenth Century Studies in Trois-Rivires, Quebec. The paper dealt with the translations and adaptations of Cervantes during the enlightenment.
Last July in France, she also presented First Contact: Rencontres de l'autre au XVIIIme at the Colloque International du Societe pour la Topique Romanesque meeting in Clermont-Ferrand; in June, she had presented Les guerres de Zingha, reine d'Angola, et les representations africanistes au sicle des lumires, at the Congrs mondial CIEF in Ottawa. The first paper analyzed how fiction narrates First Contact with the Other; the second showed the colonial sub-text of the representation of war in a little known text about an African queen of the 17th century.
Gallout is also a member of Africana Studies, and Media and Society programs.
