6 October 2014 Take Back the NightTONIGHT
Womens Collective will hold its annual Take Back the Night event on Monday, Oct. 6 to raise awareness and help eradicate sexual violence.
William Smith women and gender-queer people are invited to meet on the Smith Green at 7 p.m. for a march around campus and through Geneva. Marchers will place carnations at various places where sexual assault and rape have been reported. The event will conclude with a candle-lit vigil open to all genders on the steps of Coxe at 8 p.m.
Womens Collective will also sell T-shirts for $5 to benefit Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes, the the local sexual assault and rape crisis center. Safe Harbors is a free confidential resource for anyone who has experienced sexual or domestic violence and can be reached at 1-800-246-7273. Donations are also appreciated.
The annual march is part of an international event started in Germany in 1973, which became a national effort in 1978 in San Francisco. Dozens of college and university groups now hold such rallies to increase awareness.
