The William Smith College soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and went on to defeat Rochester 4-0 in the championship game of the 2014 Upstate Collegiate Cup hosted by Cortland. The Herons improve to 3-2-0 overall and the Yellowjackets fall to 3-2-1.
SophomoreEmma Diehlled William Smith with a goal and an assist. Four different Herons scored in the win. First-yearNicole McGlinchyplayed the opening 80 minutes and juniorJackie Doylecame in for the final 10 minutes. Neither William Smith goalie faced a shot on goal.
Just 3:04 inTheresa Lohrfound the back of the net on a header after a Heron corner which was sent into the box by Diehl. It was Lohrs first collegiate goal. Then in the 13th minute, seniorKrista Longofired a shot into the lower right corner of the goal after a pass into the six yard box by sophomoreKara Shue. It was Longos first goal of the season.
In the 66th minute, Diehl scored a goal of her own to stretch the William Smith lead to 3-0. Her strike from 25 yards out was the first goal of her college career. Just 2:10 later, sophomoreLauren Randacciofound the back of the net for the final.
The Herons held a 15-1 advantage in shots and a 7-1 lead in corners.
