400 Pounds Swept out of Landfills
17 April 2014 400 Pounds Swept out of Landfills
HWS officially kicked-off RecycleMania earlier this semester with the Sustainability Sweep. Now in its fifth year, the Sweep is a recycling sprint designed to help boost the Colleges recycling effort as students return from winter break. The event, sponsored by the Office of Sustainability, collected more than 400 pounds of recyclables, diverting them away from landfills.
Teams of up to four people each gathered on the front steps of the Scandling Campus Center to spend an hour scavenging campus in an effort to collect the most weight in recyclables. Bags full of recycling were weighed after the hour and the team that recycled the most more than 130 pounds of recyclable material won dinner at the Beef and Brew restaurant in Geneva.
Participating in this years sweep were: Katrin Ayer 16, Benjamin Brownell 17, Maddison Case 14, Stephanie Chalmers 15, Jennifer Galezo 14, Pascale Grossnickle 16, Cierra Lang 14, Raymond Ma 17, Cameron Mathieu 14, Tyla McAlmont 17, Erin Minty 14, Aboubacar Okeke-Diagne 15, Aislinn Raftis 15, Julianne Rizzotti 17, Sara Volo 17, Nicholas Vonderheyde 14, and Ellie Wells 15.
