6 December 2013 Flags at Half-staff

In honor of Nelson Mandela, South Africas first black president, the American flag on the HWS campus will be flown at half-staff until sunset, Monday, Dec. 9.

The Colleges observance follows the proclamation issued by President Barack Obama who ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on all official U.S. buildings. Obama issued the proclamation As a mark of respect for the memory of Nelson Mandela.

Weve lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with, Obama said, speaking of Mandelas death. He no longer belongs to us, he belongs to the agesHis commitment to transfer power and reconcile with those who jailed him set an example that all humanity should aspire to.

The entire HWS community joins the international community in mourning the death.
