Hayes-Conroy Joins National Park Series
20 November 2013 Hayes-Conroy Joins National Park Series
HWS Assistant Professor of Womens Studies Jessica Hayes-Conroy will present a talk about the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster called Coping with Contamination: A Feminist Look at Post-Disaster Fukushima on Thursday, Nov. 21 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Guntzel Theatre at the Womens Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y.
The talk is the third in a series titled Sentiments & Declarations of discussions coordinated by Hobart and William Smith Colleges and the Womens Rights National Historical Park. The series was created to generate discussion about the issues surrounding womens rights, and covers topics ranging from suffrage to nuclear disaster.
Hayes-Conroys lecture is based on firsthand research in Japan. She will use a feminist geographic perspective to explore the ways that Japanese men and women, both young and old, have experienced and responded to issues of radiation contamination in the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster on March 11, 2011.
All of the lectures in the series are open to the public, and held once a month on Thursday evenings from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Guntzel Theatre at the national park on Fall Street.
The remaining schedule for the fall and spring lectures follows:
Thursday, Feb. 20: Meet NZingha, queen of Angola (1583-1663): ruler, soldier, cannibal, legend by Professor of French and Francophone Studies Catherine Gallouet.
Thursday, March 27: Eternal Novices? Professionalism and American Women Monastic Composers by Assistant Professor of Music Charity Lofthouse.
Thursday, April 24: Why feminists care about funerals: the politics of public mourning by Assistant Professor of Womens Studies Michelle Martin-Baron.
Events are co-sponsored by the Womens Rights National Historical Park and the Womens Studies, Office of the President, and the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. With the support of HWS Student Affairs, buses will provide transportation from campus to the Sentiments & Declarations lectures.
