Tomaz Salamun, one of Europes most prominent poets, will give a reading of his work on Monday, Nov. 25, as part of the Trias Series. The talk will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Hirshson Ballroom.
Considered Slovenias greatest living poet and a leader of the Eastern European avant-garde in poetry, Salamun was born in Zagreb in 1941 and lives in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He is revered by many American poets for his unique surrealistic style, which draws influences from the work of Charles Simic and Charles Baudelaire.
Salamun studied art history at the University of Ljubjana, and attracted critical notice shortly after with the release of his first collection, Poker, at the age of 25. His most recent collections include Theres the Hand and Theres the Arid Chair, The Blue Tower, The Book for My Brother; Row, Woods and Chalices and On the Tracks of Wild Game.. Early in his career, Salamun also edited the literary magazine, Perspektive.
His work has been widely anthologized and globally recognized. His books have been translated into 21 languages, and nine of his 37 books of poetry have been published in English. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Jenko Prize, Slovenias Preeren and Mladost Prizes, and a Pushcart prize. alamun and his German translator, Fabjan Hafner, were also awarded the European Prize for Poetry by the German city of Muenster, as well as fellowship at Columbia University.
The Trias Residency for Writers is supported by The Peter Trias Endowed Fund for Poetry and Creative Writing. The fund was established through a generous bequest from Peter J. Trias 70. Trias graduated from Hobart with a bachelors degree in English, and went on to earn his MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers Workshop in 1972. In 1976, he published a collection of poems, The House in Venice. This years Trias Writer-in-Residence is poet Piotr Summer.
