Jasbir Puar, associate professor of womens and gender studies at Rutgers University, will present A Body with New Organs: Becoming Trans, Becoming Disabled on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The event is presented by the Fisher Center for the Study of Women and Men as part of its year-long exploration of the topic, Our Bodies, Ourselves.
Puar will discuss her paper, that historically situates the most current intersectional flavors of the day, trans and disabled, through their emergence as the latest newcomers to the intersectional fray. She will trace their coming into being and argue that the potential politics of trans disability are seemingly only perceived in terms of the intersectional trans-disabled subject or the disabled trans subject.
In addition to her position at Rutgers University, Puar is currently a 2013-14 Society for the Humanities Fellow at Cornell University, where she will be working on her third book, titled Inhumanist Occupation: Sex, Affect, and Palestine/Israel.
Puar has been a visiting lecturer in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University and a visiting fellow at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry in Berlin. She received her Ph.D. in ethnic studies from the University of California at Berkeley, her M.A. in womens studies from the University of York, England, and her B.A. in economics and German from Rutgers University. Her research interests include critical ethnic studies, cultural studies, feminist globalization studies, immigration and Diasporas, queer studies and sexualities studies.
The Fisher Center for the Study of Women in Men, established in 1998, brings together faculty, students, and experts in gender-related fields in the arts, humanities, and social and natural sciences to foster mutual understanding and social justice in contemporary society.
