22 October 2013 A Midsummer Night's Dream in Bartlett

The Geneva Theater Guild (GTG) and Hobart and William Smith are bringing one of William Shakespeares magical, sweet comedies to the community. A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by Assistant Professor of Theatre Christopher Hatch, will open in Bartlett Theatre on Nov. 1, with performances on Nov. 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9.

I am excited the community will get a new look at HWS theatre, says Hatch. We look forward to welcoming back theatre goers who havent viewed one of our shows recently.

A Midsummer Nights Dream focuses on two couples in love with the wrong partners, finally brought together rightly, thanks in part to the work of a bungling fairy named Puck. It is one of Shakespeares most popular works for the stage and is widely performed internationally.

Early Shakespeare plays are easier to understand and A Midsummer Nights Dream is a comedy so it is fun to perform and watch, explains Hatch, whose academic specialty is Shakespeare. It is a magical play with fun movement. He notes the set is modern, and filled with fairies who fight.

Members of the HWS and greater Geneva communities were invited to audition and nearly a quarter of the cast are from the Geneva community. For most of the ensemble, this is their first time performing Shakespeare.

The roles of the lovers are played by Tyler Hatton-Bullock 14; Devyn Workman 15; Amy van Loon 14 and Richard Yackel 16. The cast is also comprised of: Chatham-Rose Anastasi 16; Daniel Bullock; Wesley Cady 15; Andrew Coleburn 16; Will Conard-Malley 17; Ashley De Los Santos 17; Pat Fegley; Maxwell Malbouf 14; Nora McKay; Anna Miano 16; Steve Mitchell; Shannon Savard 15; Ben Scheibel 14; Mimi Scott 16; Walker Ward 16; Associate Registrar Carl Webster P13; Grace Weiner15; Paul Wenderlich; Sara Winant 15; Nicole Zanghi 14 and Hatchs dog Portia.

This collaborative production of A Midsummer Nights Dream is made possible through a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.

The offering is part of the Geneva 2020 initiative launched between the Geneva School District and HWS.
