26 September 2013 Dean Addresses Chinese Universities

Professor of Political Science and Donald R. Harter 39 Professor of the Humanities and Social Science Jodi Dean was recently invited to present lectures at two Chinese universities. Dean addressed the campuses of Fudan University in Shanghai and Communication University of China in Beijing.

Speaking to both graduate students and scholars in the field of communications, Dean explored concepts of new media theory. Over the past 20 years, Dean has worked to develop these ideas, and gave talks on Communicative capitalism and the limits of liberal democracy and Three myths of networked media. Not only was she able to share her theories with those in attendance at her talks, but her lectures will also be translated into Chinese and published for future students and scholars.

A high point of Deans visit to China was the opportunity to tour Shanghai with recent Hobart grad Harry Gu 13. Gu served as the Hobart representative to the Fisher Center for the Study of Women and Men Steering Committee.

Dean earned a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. She is a past recipient of the faculty award for scholarship. Dean is the author of seven books, including Blog Theory and Democracy and Other Neoliberal Fantasies (Duke 2009).
