26 September 2013 HWS Observes 9/11 Remembrance
As the nation marked the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Hobart and William Smith observed a Day of Remembrance with activities sponsored by the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL). At the Scandling Campus Center, there were several opportunities for remembrance and reflection.
During lunch and dinner hours, members of the student body created messages of hope on sticky notes displayed in Scandlings painted window. Paige Gress 15, who coordinated the event, says that many of thenotes contained the names of loved ones or words of support for the countrys troops. More than 100 students also signed an I Will Pledge, vowing to perform a good deed on 9/11 in place of those who lost their lives in the attacks.
Sept. 11 has become a major day of service across New York and throughout the country. The Corporation for National and Community Service promotes various charitable programs, like the I Will (Pay Tribute) campaign in an effort to implement 9/11 as one of the largest days of charitable service.
With the partnership of the CCESL and the larger Geneva community, HWS will continue to recognize, remind and remember the lives lost and the service given on Sept. 11, 2001.
