13 September 2013 HWS Sailing Begins Season

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team will start the 2013-14 season with three regattas this weekend. HWS will compete in the Cornell Fall Open, the Laser North and the Navy Radial Open Sept. 14-15.

HWS was voted No. 13 in the Sailing World College Preseason Coed Rankings and Heron sailors came in at No. 10 in the womens poll. This year, the Colleges return 22 student-athletes from the 2012-13 roster and welcome 11 newcomers to the squad.

Last spring, HWS competed in all three ICSA championships. The Colleges made their 14th appearance in the Coed Dinghy National Championship regatta since 1996. Heron sailors placed 14th in the Womens Dinghy National Championship and HWS finished ninth in the Team Race National Championship.

The HWS roster features a strong group of eight seniors including 2013 All-MAISA selections, Arielle deLisser, Louis Padnos and Jane Rew. Padnos, who earned coed skipper second team honors, competed in both the ICSA coed dinghy and team race national championships for HWS last spring. An All-MAISA crew team selection, Rew also represented HWS in the coed dinghy championship as well as the team race and the womens dinghy national championships. deLisser garnered All-MAISA Womens Skipper second team honors last spring. She competed in the A Division of the womens dinghy national championship. Senior Brooke Lyon also brings championship experience to the HWS sailing team. She paired with deLisser in the A Division of the ICSA womens dinghy national championship last season.

This weekend, HWS sailors will look to improve on last years sixth place finish at the Cornell Fall Open in Ithaca, N.Y. In addition, HWS sailors will also be competing in Kings Point, N.Y. at the Laser North and at the Navy Radial Open in Annapolis, Md.
