9 September 2013 Herons in Mary Hosking Invitational

The William Smith College tennis team hosted the 2013 Mary Hosking Invitational this weekend. Heron first-year Ashley Lyon won the B Flight Singles Consolation Bracket, while the pair of sophomore Charlotte Federowicz and first-year Hannah More advanced to the championship match in A Flight Doubles.

The duo of first-year Ashley Lyon and sophomore Sydney Arsenault also competed in the championship in B Flight Doubles. Ithaca, Geneseo, St. Lawrence and the University of Rochester came to Geneva to compete in the tournament.

Federowicz and More represented William Smith in A Flight Singles. More defeated Rochesters Janice Zhao in her opening round match 8-5, but fell in the second round 8-2 to top-seated Cristina Nunez of Ithaca. Federowicz was tripped up in her first match by the Bombers Allison Vizgaitis (8-3), but went on to top St. Lawrences Georgia Comber 8-4 in her first consolation match. Federowicz fell to Rochesters Molly Goodman in the semis.

Lyon and Arsenault both competed in B Flight singles. Lyon dropped her first match to Geneseos Minxuan Yuan 8-5, but cruised to the consolation title. She downed the Blue Knights Veronica Skolnick 8-0 and earned an 8-1 win over Rochesters Darby McCall in the semifinal. Lyon topped St. Lawrences Anna Young 8-6 in the championship match. Arsenault defeated Lauren Goldhar of St. Lawrence 8-4 in her first round match and then breezed to an 8-1 victory over Emily DePerrior of Rochester. In the semifinals, Arsenault fell 8-1 to Geneseos Karli Hollins.

In C Flight singles, sophomore Kelley Hartmann, first-year Annie Venditti and sophomore Hannah Webster represented the Herons. Webster advanced to the semifinals with an 8-0 win over Geneseos Miriam Van Voornveld and an 8-1 win over Ithacas Sydney Greenspan. Webster was edged out of the championship match, falling 9-7 to St. Lawrences Hallie Young. Hartmann and Venditti both dropped their first round matches. In the consolation bracket, Hartmann downed Geneseos Clarissa Bohlman 8-0 and then met her teammate, Venditti in the second round. Venditti had defeated Ithacas Kelly Fishback 8-3 in the opening round, but then fell 8-2 to Hartmann. Hartmann lost to St. Lawrences Tori Copelas 8-3 in the championship match.

Federowicz and More were the only Heron pair in A Flight Doubles. They topped Rochesters Zhao and Lauren Zickar 8-3 in the first round and beat Geneseos Amanda Rosati and Marylen Santos in the semis 8-6 before falling to St. Lawrencess Morgan McNeal and Elkie Vandenbeemt 8-3in the final.

In B Flight Doubles, Arsenault and Hartmann defeated St. Lawrences Goldhar and Hallie Young 8-6 in the opening round before falling to Ithacas Steinweiss and Vizgaitis. Lyon and Venditti teamed up for an opening round 8-4 win over Ithacas Jodi Grosberg and Maddie Overholt on Day 1. On Sunday, Lyon teamed with Arsenault for an 8-5 second round victory over Geneseos Maggie Hale and Hollins, but the pair fell in the championship 8-1 to St. Lawrences Comber and Bridget Fleming.

The Herons will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 20, when they travel to take on St. John Fisher at 4 p.m.
