The Hobart College golf team opened up the 2013-14 season with a fifth place finish in the Pitt-Bradford Invitational this afternoon. Senior Ben Ayres paced the Statesmen with a seven-over 79 at Pine Acres Country Club.
Hobart improved its team score by five strokes over last season. Ayres tied for 13th place in the 62-golfer field. All four of his teammates were within two scores of him. Sophomore Jay Puleo and senior Dillon Sass tied for 16th place with rounds of 80, a career best score for Puleo. Newcomers Billy Abrams and Dylan Hedgepeth turned in rounds of 81 to finish tied for 23rd place.
Penn State Behrend won the team title with a score of 303 behind individual medalist Nick Van Damias one-over 73. Thiel was second, four strokes back. Elmira took third (313) followed by the host Panthers (318). Hobart enjoyed a comfortable nine stroke advantage over sixth place Mt. Aloysius. A total of 12 teams competed at Pine Acres today.
The Statesmen will be back on the links Sept. 7-8 when they compete in the St. John Fisher Invitational.
