Emily Desmery 12 was recently hired as the Assistant National Broadcast Negotiator for ORION Trading, a global agency-owned barter company.

In her new position, Desmery is creating and managing media schedules and monitoring the companys buys. Formed in 1996 by President and CEO Brian McMahon P10, ORION facilitates some of the worlds companies and brands in funding media expenditures.

I am learning how to interact with clients, always an important job in media, and Im also learning how to maintain an account and what exactly goes into a full-fledged media campaign, says Desmery.

In addiiton, Desmery will coordinate media orders with television networks, verifying station contracts and working to find the most efficient ways to manage and maintain clients schedules and processes.

The results of Desmerys work can be seen every time she flips on her television. The best part about what I do is seeing a clients commercial that I have been tracking and recording get placed on television, explains Desmery. After spending weeks working on a single clients media campaign, to see it finally air and be successful is so rewarding.

Desmery also has the opportunity to meet with representatives from her favorite television networks, helping them to place ads in her favorites programs. I have learned a lot about how much work goes into placing an ad on television and how time consuming it can be, says Desmery.

Through a combination of coursework in both economics and media and society, Desmery found that she was prepared to take on her new role at ORION. In particular, the course Cultures of Advertising, taught by Assistant Professor of Media and Society Leah Shafer, was helpful in learning advertising techniques, commercial efficacy and how media campaigns have achieved success across the decades.

Desmery credits the Salisbury Center for Career Services and Professional Development for helping her to secure a job so soon after graduation. From helping her research companies to preparing for her interview, their services were readily available. They are so willing to help every student find the job of their dreams, says Desmery. You must be willing to work hard, but they are there for you every step of the way.

While on campus, Desmery served as social media chair of the Campus Activities Board, designed a line for the Arts Collective Fashion show and rowed with the William Smith Rowing Team for two years.
