Founded in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1824, the Republican Newspaper has been serving Western Massachusetts for nearly 200 years. This summer, Springfield native Kristyna Bronner 14 will become a part of the history of the prestigious paper as an intern.
The paper has been influential in the founding of the Republican Party, the career of Dow Jones and company founder Charles Dow, and in the invention of the pronoun Ms. Currently, the Republican Newspaper also maintains an online site at www.massslive.com that is the second largest news site in Massachusetts behind www.Boston.com.
In her position, Bronner will have many responsibilities, including writing articles, posting other writers stories into blogs, conducting fieldwork for stories, and also copy-editing and layout.
The classes Ive taken at HWS, such as Print Journalism and those offered in the Writing and Rhetoric department, have really taught me a lot about journalism. I am definitely interested in pursuing a career in the field post-graduation, says Bronner.
A double major in international relations and writing and rhetoric, with a minor in Asian studies, Bronner is a member of the editing staff at the Herald, assists students with their writing as a writing colleague, and was recently inducted into the Laurel Society. This fall, she will be studying abroad at Lingnan University in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong.
