Jillian McCarthy 13 and Bridget Sakowski 14 are spending the summer interning at CODEPINK, in Washington, D.C. They are working with Alli McCracken 10, intern coordinator at the organization. Founded in 2002, CODEPINK is a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement working to address such issues as health care, education and green jobs.

I am excited that Jillian and Bridget are interning with us this summer, says McCracken. She explains both students have multiple responsibilities, among them managing a project on unmanned aerial vehicles, also known as drones.

We are conducting extensive networking to help CODEPINK reach out and partner with universities that are doing research on drones. The idea is to expand our international Ground the Drones campaign to include academics as we have around other anti-war issues in the past and present, McCracken explains.

McCarthy, a philosophy major with a minor in economics and in Latin American studies, is a member of the HWSs Womens Collective. Next year, she will lead the group with classmates Maeve Donnelly13 and Amy Gallop13. McCarthy also sings in the Colleges Chorale, is a member of senior honor society Hai Timiai, a teaching fellow for philosophy, and a Lead Teaching Fellow.

I like that CODEPINK is woman-centered, and that was what attracted me to the organization. I hope to make a career out of feminist activism, so it makes sense for me to intern at an organization that is woman-focused, says McCarthy.

Sakowski is a philosophy and international relations double major, with particular interest in ethics and social justice movements. She is a member of the Genocide Symposium planning committee, the Relay for Life planning committee, a Day of Service committee member, and also works at Campus Safety.

I would love to work for an organization that focuses on human rights and social justice either domestically or internationally, says Sakowski. I have a passion for social justice movements and human rights, both of which make me very interested in what CODEPINK does. I took a class on the Morality of War with Steven Lee, which only solidified my belief that the U.S. military actions are not morally acceptable.
