21 May 2012 Alums Named to Olympic Sailing Team

Rob Crane 09 and Trevor Moore 07 have been selected to compete as part of the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team as part of the 2012 Olympic Games in England this summer. The two were previously named to the 2010 U.S. Sailing Team.

Crane, who will be competing individually, is the United States No. 1 ranked sailor in the Laser Class (one-person dinghy) and is currently ranked 26th in the world. In 2010, he was promoted to the USSTAG from the US SAILING Development Team in 2010. Internationally, he finished 3rd in the 2011 Laser North Americans and 14th in the 2011 Laser World Championship.

Upon entering Hobart College, for the first time I had the luxury of being able to sail almost year round, says Crane. I was primarily Hobarts single-handed sailor, and was the first Hobart team member to qualify for the mens Intercollegiate Sailing Associations Single Handed Championship twice, finishing third in 2008.

Moore, who will be competing as the crew for the top-ranked boat in the 49er Class (mens two-person dinghy high performance), qualified for the 2012 London Games in the 49er dinghy class by finishing ninth at the International Sailing Federation World Championships in December 2011. Along with his teammate, skipper Erik Storck, they are currently ranked No. 12 in the world.

While at Hobart, Moore was a three-time All-American, competing in seven ICSA National Championship events, leading the Colleges to the 2005 Team Race and Coed Dinghy National Championships. In 2007, he became the first Statesman to win the Everett B. Morris Trophy as the College Sailor of the Year and was also the first Statesman sailor to earn the Babe Kraus Award as Hobarts Senior Athlete of the Year.

Since graduating, Moores sailing resume boasts a fourth place finish in the Laser Class in the 2007 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, a fifth place finish in the 49er Class at the 2011 Rolex Miami OCR, a ninth place finish in the 49er Class at the 2011 ISAF Worlds and a second place finish in the 2012 Rolex Miami OCR, ISAF Sailing World Cup.

The Olympic team was selected based on top performances at the qualifying event at the International Sailing Federation Sailing World Championships in 2011 in Perth, Australia. Crane earned the top American position, placing 14th in the Laser.
