25 May 2012 Temple Has Four Books in Works

The author and co-author of numerous books Professor of Education Charles Temples publishing schedule has for the first time aligned itself so that he will have four books in production this summer: The Beginnings of Writing, 4th edition; All Children Read, 4th, edition; Childrens Books in Childrens Hands, 5th edition; and a new book that is a spin off from Childrens Books in Childrens Hands. All are with Pearson Publishing and Temple is the first author on the updated editions.

The first edition of The Beginnings of Writing came out in 1982, the year Temple joined the Education Department at HWS. It was the first comprehensive treatment of childrens invented spelling, from a psycholinguistic viewpoint, and was feted in the New York Times.

Childrens Books in Childrens Hands first appeared in 1996 and has been on a four year publication cycle.

All Children Read came out in 2000 and has been on a three-year publication cycle. The books publisher asked Temple and his co-authors to produce a shorter version of the childrens literature book, and they have instead agreed to publish two shorter books from the original comprehensive one.

Temple has three other publications out with Pearson: Understanding Reading Problems, 8th Edition; The Developmental Literacy Inventory, and Intervening for Literacy.

Temple is the co-founder and director of the Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking Project in association with the International Reading Association. He received his B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina, and his M.Ed. in curriculum studies and his Ph.D. in reading education from the University of Virginia. He also taught at the University of Houston-Victoria.
