7 May 2012 2V8 Wins Gold at State Championships

The Hobart rowing teams second varsity eight won its third consecutive New York State Collegiate Rowing Championship and the varsity eight progressed to Sundays grand final on Lake Whitney in Whitney Point, N.Y., today.

A finals only race, the Statesmen 2V8 battled Hamilton and Ithaca for the state title. Hobart needed 6:21.2 to cover the 2,000-meter course and claim the crown by open water over the Continentals, who were 13.52 seconds back. Jessica Dinan, Chris Troy, Nathaniel Shils, Reid Johnson, Morgan Robinson, Tyler Wilson-Menting, Michael Copacino, Michael Cichelli, and Chris DePaola joined the Statesmen 2V8s of 2009 and 2010 (the 2011 championship was washed out by flooding) as State Champions.

Im very proud of the 2V, Head Coach Paul Bugenhagen said. Theyre on a nice roll, racking up a Liberty League Championship and now a New York State Championship over the past two weeks. The boat is peaking as we head to our final race at the ECAC Championship next week.

The Hobart varsity eight will have a chance to join their teammates as champs on Sunday when they race in the grand final. Sarah Tanzer, Coty Burgess, Nicholas Baca, Robert McNamara, Rob Nanovsky, W. Hunter Holtz, Nick Hindle, Owen Monahan, and Joe Biesemeyer posted the only sub-6 minute time of the day, 5:59.6, finishing 2.79 seconds in front of the Bombers.

The Statesmen will face Army, Hamilton, Ithaca, Marist, and Union in the grand final.

Hobart also entered a novice four in the state championship. That crew finished third in its heat and missed out on a spot in the grand final.
