Herons Named to All-Academic Team
30 April 2012 Herons Named to All-Academic Team
Eleven members of the William Smith College swimming and diving team were recently named to the 2012 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) All-Academic Team. It is the most Herons to be so honored in over a decade.
Among the 11 students named to the All-Academic team, there were two sophomores: Lia Duffy 14 and Sally Storch 14; five juniors: Kristine Faulknham 13, Lauren Morosky 13, Casey Sherwin 13, Katie Stebbins 13 and Corinne Sullivan 13; and four seniors: Kaileigh Fowler 12, Amy Kievit 12, Caitlin OBrien 12 and Emily Rogowski 12.
It is exciting that this was the largest number of Herons to be named to the allacademic team in over a decade, says Faulknham, a biology major with a double minor in health professions and English, who is a Biology Teaching Fellow and is a member of the Western Riding Club. The team this year was able to transfer theirhard work and motivation across the board to a number of different majors and disciplines and succeed wildly. While I know personally this takes a lot of personal sacrifice to be both avarsityathlete and a good student, my teammates helped me along because they were goingthrough the same things as me.
To earn a spot on the UNYSCSA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, have an average grade point average of 3.3 over the previous two semesters, and be a participant in the UNYSCSA Championship meet.
It is always humbling to be recognized by your peers at an athletic event for something that you have accomplished away from the pool, says Rogowski, an English major with a minor in media and society, who serves as the house manager and co-creator of the Hope House, served as a tour guide for two years and is now a Senior Intern for the Office of Admissions. Taking a minute to acknowledge the fact that athletes can excel in areas such as the classroom is really important and relevant to our community.
The Herons finished 11th in the 14-team UNYSCSA Championship. The highlight of the meet for the Herons was the 400-yard medley relay on Day 2 of the Championship. Sherwin, Stebbins, sophomoreMimi Mahoney, and Duffy swam a 4:07.87 to break the school record by 0.54 seconds.
