Representing a variety of types of artwork, the 2012 Annual Student Art and Architecture Show will take place from April 27 through May 13. Visual inventions in color and black and white, in silk screens, in photographs, and in charcoal and paint will be included, as well as sculptures and digital media. Architecture students will be displaying pieces that emphasize the illustration of a rich design process, including final wood models, multimedia studies, and rendered drawings. Artwork displayed will be from students who took classes from the beginning levels to the advanced.
Professor of Art Ted Aub, Professor of Art Phillia Yi, and Associate Professor of Art Nick Ruth are curating the studio art section of the show. Associate Professor of Art Stan Mathews is curator for the architecture portion of the show.
The opening reception will be held Friday, April 27 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., in Houghton House. The art show will take place throughout the Houghton House Estate, in Houghton House, the Goldstein Family Carriage House, and the Katherine D. Elliott Studio Arts Center.
Coinciding with the Annual Student Art and Architecture Show will be an exhibit titled, 9: Nine, Honors Project Exhibition. This exhibit will represent the work of nine, senior art and architecture Honors candidates and be held in four different locations: The Smith Center for the Arts at 82 Seneca Street; The Farmers and Merchants Bank at 24-26 Linden Street; The Gallery at Dallywaters at 492 Exchange Street; and Stomping Grounds ART at 492 Exchange Street. Organizers anticipate three or four works from each studio art and architecture student will be included along with a poster project from each of the art history students.
In the area of art history, Mary Morgan Williamson 12 created a poster for the show titled Snake/Skin, under the advisement of Associate Professor of Art Lara Blanchard. Sarah Cutts 12 will present a poster representing the Honors project in arts history she is completing with Professor of Art Elena Ciletti.
Among the architecture projects selected for the exhibit is Production and Design: Crafting a Chair in Light of 20th Century Modern Design, a piece created by Patrick Kana 12 under the advisement of Aub. Kana constructed two chairs of African mahogany upholstered with black leather, as well as two chairs of African cherry. Lauren Schwarzenberg 12 will also display works representing architecture, under the advisement of Assistant Professor of Architectural Studies Kirin Makker.
Among the studio art pieces in the show is Sunset at Odells Pond. The 12 x 48 oil on canvas is part of Chuan Wus Honors project under the advisement of Ruth. Also working on projects with Ruth are Gina Iannitelli 12 and Elizabeth Perry 12; Imani Schectman 12 will have art exhibited from a project shes working on with Assistant Professor of Art Christine Chin.
