The Trias Reading Series will continue this semester when the Colleges welcome author Norman Rush for a reading on Tuesday, March 13. Rush will discuss his work as well as read selections from his fiction at 7 p.m. in the Geneva Room.
Born and raised in Oakland, Calif., Rush has had a successful career as a fiction writer, receiving numerous grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Academy of Arts and Letters, the Guggenheim Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation in the form of a Bellagio residency.
Rush graduated from Swarthmore College in 1956. Since receiving his degree, Rush has held various positions including book dealer, college instructor and from 1978 to 1983 co-country directors of the Peace Corps program in Botswana.
In 1986, Rushs collection of short stories, Whites, was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Rushs novel Mating, was the 1991 National Book Award winner for fiction and received the Irish Times International Fiction Prize. Rushs 2003 novel Mortals, completes the trilogy which includes Whites and Mating and explores the Western presence in South Africa. While Mating explored themes of Western benevolence in South Africa, Mortals, uncovers the destructive aspect of Western presence.
Rush recently completed his novel Subtle Bodies, which examines the mysteries of friendship against the backdrop of the Catskill Mountains. In addition to his work as a novelist, Rush has published essays and reviews in the New York Review of Books, The New York Times Book Review, The Nation, The New Yorker, Transition, Grand Street, and numerous other periodicals.
