21 February 2012 Hobart Claims 10-3 Victory over Valiants

The Hobart College hockey team tied the school record for goals in a game and set a new record for power-play goals in a game in a 10-3 ECAC West victory over Manhattanville tonight at The Cooler. The Statesmen notched six power-play goals in the win, surpassing the previous record of four.

The Statesmen improved to 14-10-1 overall and 5-6-1 in conference play, while the Valiants fall to 13-8-3 and 6-6-0 in ECAC West play. With the victory, the Statesmen clinched third place in the conference, and will travel to play second place Manhattanville on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in an ECAC West semifinal game.

Fourteen different Statesmen recorded at least one point. SeniorGreg Ciciolaand juniorRyan Corcoranled the Hobart effort with four points each. They each registered two goals and two assists. First-yearBronson Kovacs(2-1-3), juniorBrad Richard(1-2-3), juniorFrank Salituro(1-2-3), and first-yearTommaso Traversa(2-1-3) posted three points each.

Manhattanville jumped out to a 2-0 lead 8:46 into the first. Jason Bowles and Brian Elser scored back-to-back goals. The Statesmen answered with five straight goals, the first three each coming on a power-play. Ciciola scored first tipping in a shot by Richard. Salituro also notched his first assist of the night on the play. Salituro scored a goal of his own at 16:42 to tie the game at 2. Kovacs and senior Rick Logobardi earned the assists. Just 33 seconds later, Kovacs scored Hobarts third power-play goal in a row after passes from classmates Traversa andTerrence ONeill.

The Statesmen kept on scoring in the second period. Traversa tallied back-to-back goals 1:30 apart. His first came 1:18 into the second and was a shorthanded goal. JuniorHarry Radovichwas credited with the assist. SophomoreTommy Fiorentinoand Corcoran set up Traversas second goal of the night that made it 5-2.

At 6:02 in the second, Mark Rivera capitalized on a Valiant power-play to cut the Manhattanville deficit to two. However, the Statesmen scoring rampage picked up where it left off and notched five straight goals, with the first three in a row again coming on power plays.

At 15:56 in the middle period, Kovacs found the back of the net for the second time. JuniorsBobby HannahandDavid Stevenspicked up the assists. Just 1:04 later, Corcoran scored his second goal of the year after passes from first-yearRyan Micheland Richard. Hobarts sixth power-play tally came with 11 seconds left in the second period. Richard sent home a shot for his 10th goal this season. Corcoran and Ciciola registered the assists. At 3:55 into the final period, Corcoran found the back of the net to make it 9-3. Ciciola and Salituro teamed up to set up the play. At 7:07, Ciciola capped the victory with his team-leading 13th goal this year. JuniorMike Whiteand Longobardi earned the assists.

Junior goalieNick Broadwaterplayed all 60 minutes in goal for Hobart and finished with 35 saves. He picked up his fourth victory in net this season. Pierre-Oliver Lemieux played the opening 22:48 and stopped 10 shots, and Brian Fleming came in to play the final 37:12 and made 18 saves.

In a game that had 34 penalties, the Statesmen finished 6-for-14 on the power play, while the Valiants went 1-for-8. Each team tallied 38 shots in the contest.
