Alpine Ski Team Preps for Regionals
10 February 2012 Alpine Ski Team Preps for Regionals
Hobart alpine skier, Bart Flynn 12 recently won the Slalom and Giant Slalom races at Bristol Mountain, beating racers from Cornell, Syracuse, Alfred, RIT and Buffalo Division III varsity teams. Flynn and Weston Traub 14 have been dominating the slalom category for the men, while Rebekah Kallgren 14 is often a top-five to top-10 finisher for William Smith.
A goal for the season is to do my best to put the team in a position to be competitive, says Flynn, who is co-captain with Sarah Wilson 12. Im hopeful that we can become more competitive and closer as a team, and of course have a great time doing it.
Last year, the team saw success by both the men and the women, and competed in the Regional Championships at West Mountain in February. There, the men lost a tie-breaker for second-place to Syracuse University. The tie cost them the chance to compete in the USCSA D-III National Championships.
Even though we didnt get to go, it showed us that it was possible with the team we have. That said, we have the same team this year, so we have high expectations about the possibility of qualifying. says Flynn.
The team will compete in the Skidmore Invitational at Gore Mountain on Saturday, Feb. 11 and 12, then returns to the slopes on the 18th to ski Labrador Mountain. They will head to nearby Bristol Mountain for the Regional Championships, the national qualifier, on Feb. 25 and 26.
