Heron LAX helps local animal shelter
22 December 2011 Heron LAX helps local animal shelter
The William Smith lacrosse team recently volunteered with the Beverly Animal Shelter in Waterloo on a project that began when midfielder Katie Dexter 13 and Head Coach Pat Genovese were talking after practice. The two discussed the work of the Beverly Animal Shelter, which is a no-kill shelter and, therefore, does not receive federal funding.
We thought that getting the rest of the team on board to help out would be a really great fundraiser because we all love animals, says Dexter. Some of us had been to the shelter before to volunteer, so we saw firsthand how much help it could use.
To raise awareness, the Herons set up a table in Scandling Campus Center with a special extra of bringing a dog with them. The dog brought us a lot of popularity, and generous donors, says Dexter.
The teams efforts paid off: they raised more than $400 for the shelter and were also able to donate many bags of old towels and some office supplies.
It was overall a very successful fundraiser. The William Smith lacrosse team will definitely be running another fundraiser in the future, says Dexter.
