First-year Sarah Tompson scored on a penalty corner in the 58th minute to propel 14th-ranked William Smith to a 3-2 win at Hamilton in a non-conference field hockey match. Her fifth tally of the season broke a 2-all tie and sent the Herons to their third straight win.
Tompsons game winner came with just 12:49 remaining in the match. Junior Annie Kietzman played the corner to sophomore Melanie OConnor at the center of the circle, who then found Tompson on the left wing. Tompson fired a shot towards the net that was deflected by a Hamilton defender into the top of the cage.
Hamilton (5-9) scored the matchs initial goal, when Nikki Haskins produced her 10th marker of the season in the 22nd minute.
William Smith (14-3) pulled even three minutes later when Kietzman broke in alone and put a shot past the Continentals charging keeper. Less than two minutes later, Kietzman set the table for sophomore Taylor Cappellos team-leading 12th goal of the season.
The Continentals equalized just 46 seconds before halftime. Mary Lancaster ran in from the left side of the circle and drilled a centering pass to Haskins, who flicked the ball into the cage to tie the game.
Heron junior goalie Taryn Little made two seconds half saves to earn the win.Victoria Trentinirecorded three saves in goal for the Continentals.
William Smith lead the all-time series between the school 30-6-1. Hamilton had won the previous four meetings, all in overtime.
The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they visit No. 8 Messiah. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
