This time last year, senior Meghan Malia was among the students who met and was interviewed by Markit COO and HWS Trustee Calvin R. Chip Carver Jr. 81 and Elaine Rabkin, head of North American recruitment for Markit Group, who were on campus speaking about finance careers. The interview had been prearranged with the help of the Salisbury Center for Career Services and Malia walked away with an offer of an internship opportunity. The interviews resulted in Malia and three other seniors, Shaun Viguerie, Mark Bertucci and Christopher Welles interning in Markits New York City office this summer.
The seniors worked alongside five HWS alums at the global financial services company, including Trustee Calvin R. Chip Carver Jr. 81, the chief operating officer; Jennifer Crupnick 10, a broker in the Sales Department; Anna Darmiento 09, a business analyst in finance; Adam Kansler 90, a finance executive; and Stephen King 11, a sales associate.
Chip Carver served as an excellent resource for us. He has an open door policy at Markit and was always available to provide advice; we all felt taken care of and welcomed, says Malia, who also interned in the companys headquarters in London while studying abroad there in the spring an opportunity she credits the Salisbury Center for Career Services with helping her gain.
As a double major in mathematics and economics, she has always known she was interested in pursuing a career in business.
While at Markit I worked on third party evaluations for companies. Right off the bat, I accumulated 20 clients of my own. The experience I gained interning for Markit will prove invaluable in the future, she says.
For Welles, an environmental studies major and economics minor, this was his first formal internship and it has resulted in an offer of a job following graduation. He worked with the sales team in the group responsible for distribution of Markits data products. He explains their focus over the summer was to help expand Markits footprint and to come up with creative ways to identify potential clients outside of the companys traditional market.
Viguerie, a computer science major, said the opportunity enabled him to learn more about the area of the business in which he was most interested, working on software prototyping for the Quotes team at Markit.
I worked with some great people and learned about developing software in a professional environment. I was exposed to various Markit products and teams over the course of the summer so I left feeling well acquainted with the company, he says.
Carver returned to campus on Thursday, Oct. 27, to discuss careers in finance. The discussion took place in the Sanford Room at 7:30 p.m.
Before joining Markit, Carver was CEO of SwapsWire and managing director of Goldman-Sachs. He received his B. A. in economics from Hobart, and went on to earn his M.F.A. from New York University. Carver has been a member of the Board of Trustees for eight years, and serves on thefinancial affairs committee as vice chair,audit committee as chair, honors committee, investments committee and technology committee.
