A walk down South Main Street or across the HWS campus gives a clearsignal that Homecoming and Family Weekend has begun. Students have decorated a number of student residences showing their school pride with purple and green streamers and signs. Beta Sig includes a sign congratulating the College Bowl team on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their win, while Delta Chi and 30 Odells incorporates a cheer for Hobarts football team to beat the Merchant Marines on Saturday.
The atrium of the Warren Hunting Smith Library has become a hub of activity as alumnae, alumni and families register for the weekend.Activities include athletic events, mini-college sessions and the favorite Colleges tradition of Fall Nationals, which pits students and alums against one another in a one-of-a-kind race of hand-crafted,soapbox vehicles down Winn-Seeley Hill. Approximately 1,000 people are expected to attend the weekends events.
Senior Caroline Spruills parents, Vikki N. Spruill P12 and Jeff Spruill P12, from Kensington, Md., said they have registered for the mini-college course on the 2012 Election. From the Washington, D.C. area, theyre eager to hear new perspectives. Theyre also looking forward to visiting Fox Run as part of the wine class that Caroline is taking on campus.
Being able to visit wineries is an experience truly unique to HWS and the Finger Lakes, says Vikki, who noted this is the first time the whole family could make it to Homecoming.
Jeff says he enjoyed last years cabaret event. I was blown away by the talent that HWS has to offer.
Saturdays mini-college sessions offer a wide array of courses where alums and parents will have a chance to meet with faculty members and learn a bit more on an area of interest. This years courses also include talks on immigration, the Civil War, forensic chemistry, African-American art, weather disasters, and more.
The skies are forecast to be clear for The Heron Invitational: Heron and Statesmen cross-country at Seneca Lake State Park at 11 a.m., and alums wont want to miss the Barnburner tailgate lunch at 11:30 a.m. at the Barn. This years football game against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy kicks off at the recently renovated Boswell Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. William Smith soccer will compete against Union College at 2 p.m. on Cozzens Field. Another of the major highlights this year is the 50thanniversary celebration of the Colleges victory in the G.E. College Bowl. The event will be commemorated on Saturday afternoon at halftime during the football game.
In the evening on Saturday, the HWS Cabaret will be held in the Vandervort Room. This years cabaret talent show will Go Pink in honor of breast cancer awareness, and will feature performances by student a cappella groups, The Hobartones and Three Miles Lost. Pink treats will be available and pink attire is encouraged.
Throughout the weekend, buildings such as the Finger Lakes Institute, Intercultural Affairs and the Salisbury Center for Career Development will be open for tours, giving alums the chance to explore some familiar as well as some new places. Each of the fraternities will welcome their brothers back to campus in numerous get-togethers and open houses.
Alums and parents enjoy the opportunity to experience campus when its bustling with activity, says Director of Alumni Relations Jared Weeden 91 This weekend presents a tremendous opportunity for alums and parentsto interact with students, while students learn more about how the relationship with HWS and the members of our community doesnt end at graduation.
